ABOUT

we inspire movement!

Rails to Trails of Wayne County is a non-profit organization that promotes, develops, and converts unused railroad and greenway corridors into multi-purpose, non-motorized public paths.

The organization was founded in the mid-1990s and officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1996.

Rails to Trails of Wayne County is a volunteer-led organization overseen by a board of trustees and supported by many committed local volunteers, members, and donors.

Our supporters all share the common interest of enjoying trails, whether bicycling, walking, running, roller-blading, or horseback riding.

affiliated agencies

Rails to Trails Conservancy
We are affiliated regionally and nationally with Rails to Trails Conservancy (RTC). RTC is an American nonprofit that supports communities working to preserve unused rail corridors by transforming them into rail trails. Although RTC does not facilitate the development of trails in Wayne County directly, they do offer an array of incentives, information, resources, and networking opportunities through regional and national programs.

The Greenway Collaborative
Ohio Greenways is an Ohio non-profit that worked with The Greenway Collaborative to develop statewide trail and public corridor plans along major waterways and abandoned canal towpaths and railroad right-of-ways. This partnership included special studies for state-wide trails, but did not fund local design and construction efforts.

Wayne County Board of Commissioners
Wayne County’s commissioners have made a high commitment to our efforts by providing County Planning Department support personnel for developing grants, contracts, and maps as well as doing extensive research on right-of-way ownerships.

The Ohio to Erie Trail
In addition to expanding trails within Wayne County, we and our affiliated agencies aim to complete a trail link between the Ohio River at Cincinnati and Lake Erie near Cleveland.
